As
the cleanest fossil fuel, natural gas has become an
increasingly important source of energy in the United
States. Natural gas burns cleanly, with less pollution
than coal or oil. The main products of the combustion
of natural gas are carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Coal and oil have higher carbon ratios, as well as
higher nitrogen and sulfur contents. When burned, coal
and oil release higher levels of polluting emissions,
including a higher percentage of carbon emissions,
nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide. The combustion
of natural gas, unlike coal and fuel oil, releases
very small amounts of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides,
virtually no ash or particulate matter, and lower levels
of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. |
